One World One Heart Give Away!

 It is here!
I am participating in the fifth One World One Heart Give Away.
A wonderful event hosted by the Whimsical Bohemian, Lisa Swifka
A HUGE event, so thank you Lisa for hosting one more time!
You can read more by clicking the links above or logo below.
Welcome to Frippery. I am Pam Kern. I love all forms of art and I am a painter, crafter and an amateur photographer.
Mother of 2 college students and wife of 25 years to a wonderful man, owner of
3 dogs, 3 cats and hoping to be mom to a few chickens this summer.
I am an enthusiastic home decorator, furniture revamper and decorative painter.
Much of my inspiration comes from other bloggers and their amazing creativity.

This is an event for bloggers worldwide to meet, get acquainted and share a little bit of themselves in a give away.
A chance to connect with like minded people across the planet.
Also a chance for each participant to host a give away.
Since I will be flying on the wings of One World One Heart
I have chosen to create a mixed media angel on canvas as my give away prize.
She is painted in acrylic on stretched canvas, 8" by 10", embellished with vintage velvet leaves and fabric flowers in soft pinks and silvers. Since I adore a little sparkle, she also has a hint of magic in the way of some silver glass glitter here and there.
To win her for your very own all you have to do is leave a comment and a way for me to contact you, via email or your blog. Then go visit all of the other fabulous blogs and see what treasures they are giving away as well.
You might make a few new friends along the journey.
I will draw a number at random at the end of the event, February 17th, and announce the recipient of my angel painting. She will then be sent on her way to the winner's home and hopefully bring blessings, grace and a bit of magic along with her.
Good luck and happy visiting.

Pastel Peeks and Licorice Glances

Color inspiration right at home.
Creamy banana yellow in my breakfast bowl mixed with
soft tangerine. Crisp white plates and cups.
Soap the color of warm vanilla.
Sunny and fragrant as a lemon drop when grated for laundry soap, recipe courtesy of  Maryjane.
Sky blue cut glass like rock candy and cheery strawberry red.
Butter mint green and vintage peach with a little black to cut the sweetness.
Candy store colors are my inspiration lately.
Guess what I'm up to?

What inspires you every day?

Help I Need Color!

Bits here and there just aren't enough anymore.
My neutral walls are closing in!
I want blues and greens and yellows with accents of red, pink and orange.
Do I paint my walls white as a background for brights? Do I go for pastel versions of my favorite colors?
Help me! I need your suggestions. I have chosen a few paint samples but I just can't decide.
I have this...
Bits and pieces of my passion for color...

But I want THIS or THIS or THIS...
Are ya feelin' me?
Can I get an Amen?
I am nuts for Meadowbrook Farm.
It is so much more what I had in mind when we built our house.
It is what we started out doing .
Then I got the feeling people thought I should tone it down.
I got caught up in neutrals and staging and blah, blah, blah...
I painted over all of the exuberance.
I want my style back!
Give me color!!!!!
Like THIS too!
Happy Loves Rosie, more color!!!
So...what do you think...???
(See, I am back to asking permission.)
I need to let go, let color back in.
It's my party...right?
I'm too old to worry about appearances and too young not to revel in what brings joy!

If I go missing for a bit it is because I am up to my elbows in swatches.
I will be rediscovering myself in this sea of neutrality.

When Life Gives You Snow...

Host a winter garden dinner party!
Indoors of course.
Keep it cozy and reflect an outdoor theme.
Don't forget placecards that remind your guests what is happening just outside.
Now join us for a little something delicious and warm.
Stay a bit and take the chill off.
Spring will be along before we know it.

If winter comes, can spring be far behind?"

In the morning...
Funeral of a dear friend's beloved father...
Long life, well lived...
Reunited with a wife missed for several years ...
A son lost much earlier...
Hard goodbye for son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, sister...
Later in the day...
My children gathered with us for dinner, board games, cooking, football...
The joy of being surrounded by family...
The making of memories...
We purchased our property because of the dear friends who yesterday experienced loss...
They celebrated a life well lived while saying goodbye...
We built this home on this land which has contained so much life...
We have lived so much here...
Life is a continuum of beginnings and endings...
Constantly moving and changing...
Yesterday was a good day.

Random Decorating and Thoughts on a Sunny Day

I noticed something odd when I stepped outside with Baby this morning. I think she was perplexed too. (Gratuitous doggy photo. Man, talk about needing some grooming!)
What strange phenomenon are we seeing here? Is that sunlight? Must be, as the trees seem to be casting shadows.

Are we still in Ohio? Sun? In the winter? In Ohio?
A rare thing indeed.

On top of that, we are having a heat wave. The high today will actually make it to 30 degrees!
Of course, snow again tomorrow, but the sun does wonders for my motivation.
Time to polish a bit, make everything sparkle and shine and glisten. Well, lets not get carried away. But a little bit of freshening up can make an old girl feel renewed.
(Note the term girl. I don't consider myself an old woman yet!!!)

I need to fluff up the empty spots left from Christmas. I have some big plans for Frippery Farmhouse this year. New colors, new arrangements, new flooring, finally get the second floor completely redecorated. (Or maybe just decorated as I have let that part go for several years as the kids were climbing through the teen years and having decorated rooms was not on their list of important stuff to do. At least not what mom would call decorated, hee hee.)
I did manage to floof the mantle a tiny bit. These colors are begging to be spread throughout the farmhouse. I do think all the pretty whites and neutrals I see in rooms are just breathtaking. I have tried to do that in my home but color keeps calling to me. Why fight it? I happen to like kitchsy junk and story book color. In the back of my mind, with the employment situation, I was afraid we might need to put the house on the market and I always hear neutral neutral neutral...
However things slowly seem to be looking up so I am going to make this MY house again. As Scarlett says, "I'll worry about that tomorrow."
Oh...and in case you are wondering...the word of the day on my calendar is coevel, meaning of equal age, antiquity or duration, usually refering to things of great age such as galaxies and ancient civilizations. Seriously? This has to be a cosmic joke right?

Wise words and true..."Do not regret growing older, it is a privilege denied to many."

Word of the Day

Lately I have been waking up feeling as grey as the weather. Don't get me wrong, if it's winter, I prefer it to be covered in snow. It's just that life is speeding by and I can't seem to catch up, better to just pull the covers over my head and wait for spring.

This morning for instance. The alarm went off and I lay in bed listening to the list of school delays and closings. I remember it hasn't been but a few years since I would listen with anticipation for our school district's name. I adored snow days and being able to give the good news of a free day to my kids. Then make a leisurely breakfast of french toast and crispy bacon to entice them down the stairs. We could stay in our jammies and watch the snow fall, play a game, read a book, build a snowman...text friends... watch youtube videos...(you know how it goes). Still, we were all together and snug. Now, no more snow days in our house, just the radio letting me know it is time to face the day.

So face it, I do. While sitting at my desk I pull out my little magnifying mirror which I have been keeping there as an important tool. Why, you may ask? Because I don't need another person brushing a stray piece of hair from my face and then finding, much to both our dismay, that it is my face! Beside my mirror, I keep my tweezers, no more embarassing hairs growing where they shouldn't. This is a part of aging I didn't really count on. Yuck!

Now, that's done...let's look at my word of the day calendar...Really?...Do I need this?...The word today is "rugose", meaning full of wrinkles... Thanks karma, or whoever is in charge of practical jokes on midlife women. What's tomorrow's word, perhaps "hirsute"?  This is getting old, no pun intended.
Know any plastic surgeons who need a little free practice? Hope your day goes smoothly.

Oh well, like the saying goes, "It's better than the alternative."

Creative Breathing 12 Month Tag Along Linky

Sweet Elizabeth of Bluebird Papercrafts is hosting a Happy Homemaker Tag Along. Each participant is to make 2 tags a month with their own theme in mind for the months of 2011. One tag to keep and one to add each month to share with our partner at the end of the year. What a lovely Christmas gift. Have you visited Elizabeth's blog, Creative Breathing? I am gaga for this girl. She posts wonderful and nostalgic stories of growing up that evoke sharp, sweet memories. On top of that she has the most cheerful, whimsical and retro crafting style! I cannot get enough. Like taking a little vacation. Don't get me started on her studio either! Can you say ADORABLE? Sheesh!
This year I am going to make some time to craft following some of her tutorials. Yes, she is that generous. She shares all of her patterns and tips too.
I know this tag along will be a blast.
Thanks Elizabeth!

On to my January tag. The theme I chose is Every Day is a Holiday, with the thought of finding something to celebrate each month. The rules are that we could purchase paper and a few supplies at the beginning of the year and everything from that point on is use what you have on hand. Since I have more supplies than I will ever use I kept my purchase to one pad of Cosmo Cricket paper that I purchased at Archivers with a coupon, 30% off, woo hoo and thank-you-very-much!

Delish colors!
I gathered some supplies from my craft room. At this point after the recent months of craft show frenzy, I can't even walk in there, so I made this tag at the table in the family room.

Elizabeth asked us to share our process or a tip or two. I usually use cardboard from cereal or cracker boxes as the base for my tags and always Zip Dry glue to adhere cardstock front and back. This time, I had a stack of Christmas cards laying around so they will be the base for my tags this year. I also used the cards to punch out my white snowflakes. Nice and sturdy...and already snow colored too. (At least when the snow is fresh, tee hee.)
I used scraps of ribbon and vintage lace and a touch of glitter because everything looks better with glitter. I never leave the house without some stuck someplace on my person. Just an added beauty tip...or not.

I want my January tag to celebrate the brilliant winter sun glistening on the ice and turning the world into a story book place. My stylish homemaker is out in the brisk air skating her way headlong into this fresh new year.

Not sure who said "Creative minds are rarely tidy." but I can vouch for that.

Captured Images of the New Year

As  I have been taking down, packing away and tidying up 2010 I have had much time for reflection.

Thinking about the year just gone by as well as the bright new year ahead.

Those thoughts revolved around what to do and where to go from here.

Opportunity for growth surrounds us. New ways of thinking about what the word growth really means have been spinning inside my head.

Each year brings a fresh slate to put your mark upon.

Where, how, when. To what end? Ponder, ponder...

I am trying to make some decisions.

Of course Chloe's advice is take a nap and think about it later.

As Yogi Berra reportedly said
"When you come to the fork in the road, take it."

Changes Bright and New

A new year, a new look. It was time to brighten things up around here.

I feel refreshed thanks to my talented daughter, who designed my new header. What do you think? A little more color, a clean slate, something different.
I feel like the lights have been switched on, the crystal polished and gleaming, the cobwebs chased from the corners.
I am ready to face this new year, 2011, and whatever it brings our way.
Are you ready too? Let's venture forth together and share in the possibilities.

Have a magnificent Monday, P.
